Job Summary

The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for supporting the Camp Director and other outdoor program staff in achieving excellence in all aspects of the management and operation of her/his assigned camp. The Assistant Camp Director will contribute to the programmatic vision for summer camp, support camper and staff recruitment and retention activities, support the financial and operational performance of the Camp, and build relationships with camper families, staff, alumni and community leaders.

 

 

 

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibilities of the Director in her/his absence.
  • Provide coaching, support and feedback for camp staff.
  • Assist in planning, directing, supervising and evaluating all camp programs and staff.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of staff training.
  • Evaluate the need for, prepare, and conduct in-service staff trainings throughout the year.
  • Oversee the management of the food service area through supervision of Food Service Manager and review of food service program.
  • Ensure staff morale by monitoring that individual needs are met (rest, time off).
  • Remain current with information on the developmental needs of girls and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience curriculum.
  • Assist with the design, delivery and evaluation of camp programs consistent with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience that meets the needs and interests of the camps target populations and ensure delivery in a safe and quality manner.
  • Support the staff and camper recruitment and retention strategies of the Camp Director and Girl Scout organization.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Girl Scout Camp in the Greater Atlanta community, attending camp fairs, Girl Scout Service Unit Meetings and other community events to recruit girls for camp.
  • Assist the Camp Director in overseeing the business management functions of the camp including financial record keeping, budgeting, office operations, camp store, etc.
  • Interpret, enforce and assist in teaching state, ACA, and Girl Scout Safety guidelines and standards. Implement and monitor that all health, safety and program standards are being met.
  • Ensure American Camp Association standards are being upheld throughout camp.
  • Deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, including but not limited to outdoor education badges and Journeys, and assist in training and developing staff to deliver the curriculum in the camp setting.
  • Support the Girl Scouts’ mission statement, goals, and objectives.
  • Respond to parent phone calls and emails in a timely, courteous manner that delivers superior customer service.
  • Call or designate someone to call absentee campers at the beginning of each session.
  • Assist the Camp Director in developing routines, schedules, procedures, and budgets as necessary.
  • Prepare, review and submit records and requested reports on time.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skills & Experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation or education preferred.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience leading staff and/or volunteers at camp.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, supervise, evaluate and schedule staff.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Ability to make decisions and respond calmly in stressful situations.
  • Comfort and ability to live, sleep, and work in a rustic outdoor environment with irregular hours.
  • Ability to consistently deliver superior customer service to campers and their families.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of computer software, word processing, and database operations.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout Leadership Experience curriculum a plus.

 

POSITION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Live on site in Council provided housing while summer camp is in session.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires the physical strength and stamina to live, traverse, and conduct activities on steep, unleveled, rough terrain. Ability to lift and/or transfer objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

 

Must be able to successfully complete and clear a criminal, MVR, and sex offender background check**
